Nonlinear emission mechanism for continuum radiation in Jupiter’s magnetosphere

چکیده
The question of how continuum radiation trapped in Jupiter’s magnetosphere might be generated is considered. It is shown that the efficiency of the linear conversion is not sufficient to account for the observed intensity of the emission. We discuss nonlinear processes that can more easily provide the required conversion efficiency. The field strengths of upper hybrid waves required to generate the fundamental harmonic emissions are ;0.5 4 4 mV m. Comparison of the results of the discussed model with electric fields reported in the Jovian magnetosphere shows that the model adequately explains the generation of continuum radiation trapped in the planetary cavity.

Io’s volcanism controls Jupiter’s radio emissions
[1] Jupiter’s sodium nebula showed an enhancement in late May through the beginning of June 2007. This means Io’s volcanic activity and the magnetosphere’s plasma content increased during this period. On the other hand, Jupiter’s radio emission called HOM became quiet after the sodium nebula enhancement. The HOM emission is considered to be related to the activity of aurorae on Jupiter. These o...
متن کاملNonlinear mode coupling in pair plasmas
Pulsar magnetospheres are composed of electron-positron plasmas characterised by broadband electromagnetic emission, the source of which remains elusive. This paper investigates one possible emission mechanism in which electrostatic oscillations are coupled to propagating electromagnetic waves by the magnetic field inhomogeneity, thus creating a source of radiation in the pulsar magnetosphere. ...
متن کاملNo Detectable H3 Emission from the Atmospheres of Hot Jupiters
H3 emission is the dominant cooling mechanism in Jupiter’s thermosphere and a useful probe of temperature and ion densities. The H3 ion is predicted to form in the thermospheres of close-in ‘hot Jupiters’ where its emission would be a significant factor in the thermal energy budget, affecting temperature and the rate of hydrogen escape from the exosphere. Hot Jupiters are predicted to have up t...
متن کاملThe first three-dimensional reconstruction of a celestial object at radio wavelengths: Jupiter’s radiation belts
For an object where the emission is optically thin, it is shown that the visibility measured by an interferometer is a sample of the three-dimensional Fourier transform of the object. If the object rotates, then it is possible to sample this three-dimensional Fourier space adequately, and so reconstruct the object in three dimensions. Using this principle, reconstructions of Jupiter’s synchrotr...
متن کاملJovian Dust Streams: A monitor of Io’s volcanic plume activity
Streams of high speed dust particles originate from Jupiter’s innermost Galilean moon Io. After release from Io, the particles collect electric charges in the Io plasma torus, gain energy from the co-rotating electric field of Jupiter’s magnetosphere, and leave the Jovian system into interplanetary space with escape speeds over 200 km s. Galileo, which was the first orbiter spacecraft of Jupite...
